What to do in the morning in New Orleans
What better way to get an initial feel of the unique character and atmosphere of New Orleans by taking a leisurely stroll around the magnificent French Market in the famous historic French Quarter? Browse the traditional fare and perhaps buy a memento of your New Orleans experience.
Walk to Jackson Square in the French Quarter and you’ll find The Cabildo. Built between 1795 and 1799, The Cabildo was the home of the New Orleans government during the Spanish colonial period. Today it’s a magnificent museum which will provide you with a great introduction to the city’s fascinating history and rich cultural diversity. Also in Jackson Square are the impressive St Louis Cathedral and the bronze Jackson Monument.
How to spend an afternoon in New Orleans
After lunch in one of the excellent eateries in the French Quarter, head to the gorgeous Garden District on one of the famous traditional street cars, a great way to see the city. Originally founded in 1832 by Barthelemy Lafron, the beautiful antebellum houses of the Garden District provide wonderful photo opportunities.
Afterwards, visit the Lafayette Cemetery, one of the most popular historic sites in the city. Established in 1833, Lafayette Cemetery is beautiful and atmospheric, with many elaborate marble tombs that are among the finest pieces of architecture in New Orleans.
Things to do in the evening in New Orleans
At night New Orleans bursts into life, buzzing with a vibrant carnivalesque spirit, particularly on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, where many of the best jazz bars and restaurants are to be found.
Enjoy a drink or two listening to some authentic jazz, before sampling New Orleans’ famous Creole and Cajun cuisine in one of the excellent restaurants. Recommended dishes include Cajun Crawfish Étouffée, a delicious spicy stew, and Creole Jambalaya, a spicy type of paella.
