Top Five Activites in Redondo Beach, California
Redondo Beach is a hidden gem among Southern California’s beaches. It’s not as well-known as Manhattan Beach or Venice Beach but in my opinion, that’s part of the charm; it’s palm-lined streets are wide and less busy by comparison.
For me, it’s the perfect way to relax and unwind after one of our best-loved USA tours, like California and the Golden West or Historic Route 66. On each of these holidays, you’ll arrive in Redondo Beach having spent two full weeks exploring North American icons like spectacular Pacific Coastal Highway and the utterly humbling Grand Canyon, so staying on for an extra couple of days in beautiful Redondo is my favourite way to relax, unwind and reflect on the adventure.
On this two-night tour extension, you’ll stay at Sonesta Redondo Beach and Marina, where you’ll have magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean and the Palos Verdes Hills. And as for what to do with the extra time? Here are my top five recommendations for two days in Redondo Beach…
Relax on Redondo Beach’s golden sands
Sometimes, after an exciting sightseeing holiday, there’s nothing better than putting your feet up – and Redondo Beach has just the spot: a 1.5 mile stretch of golden sand lapped by the Pacific Ocean edges the town. Pull up a deck chair and bring your favourite read for a couple of days of nothingness. Be sure to stay for sunset – they’re absolutely unbeatable.
If you want a little more activity, you could opt for a slow stroll all the way along the coastline, starting in Vista del Mar and ending down on Torrance Beach. The boarded promenade makes for an easy walk all the way.
Take a coastal bike ride
The coastal bike ride along the 17-mile bike path is a great way to enjoy the scenery and beaches, starting in Redondo and ending in Santa Monica. It runs parallel with the Pacific Coast Highway, so the views really are unbeatable.
Dinner and shopping at the pier
Arching from the bottom of Torrance Blvd all the way to King Harbor, the classic 1960’s multilevel pier is renowned for its unique horseshoe shape and is the hub of Redondo. It offers the best viewpoint for watching the spectacular sunsets over the Pacific Ocean, not to mention the pelicans, dolphins and sea lions at play.
For dinner with a view, there’s no better place to be. There’s a collection of scenic oceanfront restaurants, shopping and nightlife. Come nightfall, the area is abuzz with the beat of live music and trill of laughter dancing through the air.
Whale watching from Redondo Beach
Getting a glimpse of a whale emerging from the water is thrilling. There’s plenty of whale watching opportunities from Redondo Beach and the area is known for sightings of Finback, Humpback and Minke whales plus an assortment of dolphin species. The best time to see them is from November to April.
Visit a comedy club in Redondo Beach
A comedy club is a great way to get a feel for the local life and in Redondo Beach, an evening at the Comedy & Magic Club is a must. It has been eliciting laughs for over 40 years and it hasn’t changed much in that time – the food is good; the comedians are reliably hilarious, and the service always comes with a smile. Complete the evening with dessert at the Cheesecake Factory – so much choice, you might begin to wonder if you’ll ever feel hungry again!
