Idyllic Italian Lake holidays
The Italian Lakes have been pulling in holidaymakers for centuries, no doubt lured by the landscapes – a chain of glittering lakes backdropped by forested mountains and dotted with tiny isles just waiting to be discovered.
Each lake has its own charm and character, which makes the region such a delight to explore, wherever your Italian lake tours visit. There’s little Lake Orta, where time-warp towns move at a go-slow pace and walkers are rewarded with hillside sanctuaries (and panoramic views). Still refreshingly uncrowded, Isola San Guilio floats dreamily in its centre.
Just across the border from Switzerland, Lake Maggiore has more of an old-money feel to it, with grand lakefront hotels and a pair of palazzo-topped islands. Less glitzy than Lake Como, it has its own star attractions including the Borromean Islands and attractive lakeside towns of Stresa and Verbania.
Meanwhile Lake Garda is all about variety – think crenellated castles, vineyards, Roman ruins and fragrant lemon groves. Stroll through medieval villages to lose yourself in the narrow lanes, and eye up a 13th century castle, or explore Austrian-influenced Riva, considered the most important town on the lake, with its beaches and mountain backdrop. It’s easy to plan in day trips to romantic Venice and Verona too.

What our experts love about the Italian Lakes
One of my favourite areas in Italy, the Italian lakes combine the beauty of the surrounding mountains and the delightful lakeside towns and villages for a lovely stay. Cruising the lakes is a very relaxing way to take in the splendid views.
What are the best places to visit in the Italian Lakes?
Lake Garda
The largest of the Italian lakes, Garda sits midway between fashion-focused Milan and the dreamy canals of Venice. One of the most popular areas to explore for Italian lakes holidays, there’s plenty to discover along its 90-mile length. Pretty Sirmione is packed with Roman history, including the country’s largest Roman villa, while there’s medieval charm to be found in Lazise and Malcesine, with its 13th century castle. Or discover lovely Limone, famous for its lemon groves, which has been called the most picturesque village on the lake, or Riva, with its Austrian influences and tempting beaches.

Lake Maggiore
Split between Italy and Switzerland’s Italian-influenced canton of Ticino, an Italian lakes tour to Lake Maggiore is a whirl of colours, from the boats in the harbour of picturesque fishing village Isola dei Pescatori to the botanic gardens on Isola Madre, two of the beautiful Borromean islands dotted across the lake. The third, Isola Bella, has its own attractions with a Baroque palace, while there’s more to tempt you back on the lakeshore, including Stresa, with its Belle Epoque architecture and colourful palazzos, and Verbania, with its own aristocratic villas and lush gardens.

Lake Orta
Only an hour’s drive from stylish Milan, Lake Orta is a world away from the designer-lined streets, Smaller and less well-known than the other lakes, this captivating spot somehow stays under the radar. Gaze out across the shimmering waters to fairytale Isola San Guilio on its tiny island in the heart of the lake, home to a 4th century basilica. And sitting in the foothills of the Swiss Alps, the ancient town of Orta San Giulio dates back to the Roman era, although wandering the flower-lined cobbled streets has an entirely timeless feel that’s a big part of its charm.

Venice
The floating city needs little introduction, one of the world’s most beautiful places that’s as rich in art and culture as romance. An easy day trip from Lake Garda on our escorted tours of the Italian lakes, this endlessly fascinating city has something for everyone too, whether you’re looking to see Venice’s iconic architecture and artworks, relax in a gondola as you soak in the atmosphere, sip prosecco and nibble cicchetti in a waterside bar, or lose yourself in the maze of backstreets, climbing tiny bridges and stumbling upon historic squares and grand palazzos along the way.

Verona
The city of Romeo and Juliet, there’s a whisper of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers around every corner. But there’s more to Verona than the world’s most famous story of love and tragedy. At the heart is the astonishing 1st century Roman amphitheatre, where the annual Opera festival still takes place, while the city’s historic centre is home to Roman and medieval remains galore, including the wonderfully preserved Mercato Vecchio. Another easy day trip from Lake Garda, you can also see the Gothic tombs of the Scala family, who ruled in the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as Juliet’s balcony.

Sirmione
One of the best places to base yourself on Lake Garda, vibrant Sirmione is as good for history-lovers who want to step back through the centuries as for those who prefer to stroll around the lakeside or relax on one of the beaches. Discover one of the lake’s oldest settlements, whose stilt houses date back to the Stone Age, or visit the Roman thermal baths and Grotto of Catullus, the remains of northern Italy’s largest Roman villa. For more recent history, climb the castle ramparts at the 13th century Scaliger Castle for incomparable views of the lake.

More information about Italian Lakes
Can you swim in Italian lakes?
Yes, you can swim in the Italian lakes, and it’s a highlight of Italian lake tours. The water quality is constantly monitored and the lakes have little beaches and bathing areas to use, with some of the best at Lake Maggiore. July and August are the best months to swim, with the water holding its warmth into September – early summer is also pleasant, if a bit more refreshing, but don’t expect to swim year-round as temperatures drop considerably outside the warmest months.
What activities do Italian lakes offer?
There’s plenty to keep you entertained on an Italian lakes holiday. As well as walking trails around all the lakes, with routes for different levels, you can swim in the clear waters too. Or try your hand at watersports, with everything from sailing and canoeing to more adrenaline-fuelled fun like waterskiing and wakeboarding, plus windsurfing and kitesurfing in locations with a more consistent breeze. Or for a more relaxing way to explore the Italian lakes, take a boat trip, including paddle steamers which ply the waters.
What makes Italian lakes a special place to visit?
Quite apart from the glorious scenery, with colourful towns lining the clear blue waters of the lakes, this part of Italy has an enviable mix of things to do. It’s easy to combine boat trips with time exploring historic sites, day trips to some of Italy’s great cities, and even get a taste of some of Italy’s neighbouring countries who have influenced the towns on the border.
When is the best time to visit Italian lakes?
There’s plenty to tempt you to book Italian Lake tours any time from April to October. The gorgeous gardens lining the lakes are at their best in spring, while the temperatures are pleasant for exploring without the crowds of summer. In September and early October, you can still enjoy sun and quieter towns with water that’s usually warm enough to swim. July and August see the highest temperatures if you’re looking for sun and a chance to get out on (and in) the water, although it’s also when most visitors descend on the area and can often be unpleasantly hot to walk.
What is the most famous Italian lake?
While the three larger lakes can all make their own claims to fame, Lake Como is perhaps the most famous of the group, a favourite of celebrities, including George Clooney who owns a villa there, along with everyone from the Versaces to footballers and millionaires. Inspiring poets, artists and writers, it’s also been immortalised too many times to count.
Which is the largest Italian lake?
Lake Garda is easily the largest Italian lake, measuring 143 square miles, more than twice the size of Lake Como. Lake Maggiore takes second place, while little Lake Orta is the smallest of the four lakes.
