Heavenly Hawaii holidays & tours
America’s 50th state is an island paradise. These tropical isles are the tips of the world’s biggest mountain range; over 130 scattered peaks emerging from the deep azure waters of the Pacific. But look closer and you’ll discover that each island has its own personality, its own attractions and its own adventures.
It may be part of the United States, but set over 2,300 miles from the mainland, Hawaii’s identity is firmly rooted in its Polynesian heritage, mixed with influences from European explorers and American missionaries to Asian immigrants, mixed into a modern-day multicultural melting pot.
You won’t need to look far to find those picture-postcard golden sand beaches, surf breaking on the shore, or marvel at the awesome power of one of the world’s most active volcanoes erupting in Volcanoes National Park. Elsewhere, lush rainforest lines sheer cliffs, perfect for hiking to hidden waterfalls in a landscape that seems untouched by time.
Or discover more of the islands’ heritage on our Hawaii holidays, from its Polynesian origins to more recent history as part of the United States, including the moving Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Save time to enjoy a traditional luau before hopping between the islands, stopping at Maui, Oahu and the ‘Big Island’ on our Hawaii tours.
What are the best places to visit in Hawaii?

Big Island
Larger than all the other Hawaiian Islands combined, the Big Island is aptly named. Home to some of the top tourist attractions in Hawaii, you’ll find beaches and vivid green rainforests, coffee plantations and historic sites, as well as Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and a huge 450ft lava tube. Another big draw is Mauna Kea, whose 14,000ft peak towers above the island. If you measure the mountain from the ocean floor, it’s an astonishing 33,600ft, dwarfing Mount Everest.

Maui
Nicknamed ‘the Magic Isle’, Maui is probably what you picture when you think of Hawaii’s tropical beaches and beautiful scenery – so much so that it has frequently been voted ‘Best Island’ by Conde Nast readers. As well as its idyllic stretches of golden sand, you’ll find lush green Iao Valley State Park, home to the Iao Needle. This 1,200ft spike of rock stands apart from the surrounding hills, towering above the tree-lined surroundings. Or discover Hawaii’s marine creatures at the Maui Ocean Center with its 54ft viewing tunnel and green sea turtles living in a lagoon.

Oahu
The bustling heart of Hawaii, Oahu is home to the state capital Honolulu as well as iconic Waikiki Beach. But beyond the high-rise buildings and lively seafront, Oahu is where the course of Hawaiian history was determined, when King Kamehameha helped unify the islands in the early 1800s. Home to former royal residence, the Iolani Palace, you’ll also find the five attractions making up Pearl Harbor National Memorial here. There’s spectacular scenery to discover as well, especially at Nu’uana Pali, once the site of one of Hawaii’s bloodiest battles, now one of the most magnificent panoramas in the islands.

Kauai
Fringed with 50 miles of white sand beaches and wonderful snorkelling on the coral reefs, Kauai is arguably the most beautiful of the Hawaiian islands – against some stiff competition. The ‘Garden Isle’ is the oldest of the islands geologically and home to Waimea Canyon State Park - known as the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific’, it stretches almost ten miles long and 3,000ft deep. Elsewhere, picturesque Hanalei Bay was one of the main locations used for filming South Pacific, while the dramatic cliffs of Na Pali are familiar from the Jurassic Park movies.

Volcanoes National Park
Set on Hawaii’s Big Island, Volcanoes National Park is home to two active volcanoes including Kilauea, one of the most active on earth. Over the last thousand years, the volcano has covered almost 90% of its surface in lava flows, with only short periods of quiet among the eruptions. As well as hikes and viewpoints over the glowing lava, you can venture into a huge lava tube and drive the Chain of Craters road, just a few of the highlights of this stark and striking landscape.

Which Hawaiian islands should I visit?
There’s no bad choice if you’re picking an island in Hawaii to visit, but each does have its own character and attractions. The ideal option is to mix several contrasting islands on one Hawaii tour, to get a taste of the destination’s different sides. Oahu is the busiest of the islands but it’s here that you’ll find historic landmarks such as the Pearl Harbor National Memorial and the Iolani Palace, as well as Waikiki Beach. If you’re fascinated by Hawaii’s volcanoes, the Big Island is home to Volcanoes National Park and two active peaks, along with black sand beaches and coffee plantations. Nicknamed The Garden Isle, Kauai is lush and green, with botanical gardens, great hiking and the dramatic Na Pali coast. Or if you’re searching for beaches and a chance to relax, Maui fits the bill. Of the smaller islands, little Lanai is perfect for some laid-back luxury while Molokai is a taste of authentic Hawaii, although that also equals limited tourist infrastructure.
Are there family-friendly activities in Hawaii?
Yes, the Hawaiian islands are ideal for families with children of all ages. The beaches will appeal to the whole family, whether you’re travelling with toddlers or teens, plus there’s surfing and other water sports for older kids. Little ones will also love Honolulu Zoo, while there’s more excitement for older ages at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, with its two active volcanoes. There’s also a chance for children to discover more about Hawaii’s history and culture at the Polynesian Cultural Center with performances and interactive displays, as well as more recent history at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Or for more active fun, there’s hiking, ziplining, riding and other outdoor adventures to enjoy on our Hawaii tours.
What is the weather like in Hawaii year-round?
The weather in Hawaii is generally warm year-round, with temperatures hovering between 23C and 30C during the day times. There’s most sunshine between March and September, with more rain falling between October and February. Some islands, such as Kauai tend to be wetter, while the west coasts of all the islands are usually drier than the east. If you’re heading to higher altitude, the winter months are noticeably cooler and rainier.
How long should I plan to stay in Hawaii?
If you’re hoping to see more than one island, plan to spend 10-14 days exploring – two weeks is around the right amount of time to explore three islands, or two islands in more depth. You’ll want to allow an absolute minimum of a week for your Hawaii holidays, in order to explore one of the islands. Given the long journey to reach Hawaii – plus any jetlag – it’s best to spend longer to make the most of your time there. Needless to say, it’s very easy to spend more than two weeks hopping between the islands if you have more time to spare.
What is the best time to visit Hawaii?
The best time to plan your Hawaii holidays is between March and September, when there’s the least rain and the highest temperatures, perfect for hitting the beach and getting outdoors. But you can still explore the Hawaiian islands during the rest of the year, with great surfing during the winter months and fewer crowds across the islands. It can be noticeably cooler and wetter at altitude though.
What are some must-try Hawaiian foods?
Kalua pork is one of the best-known Hawaiian dishes, slow cooked in an underground oven and wrapped in banana leaves, while there’s also plenty of fantastic fish and seafood to be found. Poke is a classic, with raw fish (usually ahi tuna) mixed with soy sauce and green onions, and accompanied by rice and various other fresh ingredients. For Hawaiian comfort food, luau stew is made with taro leaves cooked until they’re meltingly soft, often using ginger, coconut milk, or seaweed for added taste, with one of the most popular versions including beef brisket. You shouldn’t leave without trying poi as well, a traditional dish made from taro which looks like a purple mushy pudding – an acquired taste but it’s a classic Hawaiian staple. For dessert, Dole whip, a frozen fruity concoction which tastes like pineapple ice cream, is one of the most popular options, or try haupia, a coconut pudding with a texture like jelly.
Is Hawaii an expensive destination?
One of the most expensive US states to visit, Hawaii’s remote location helps drive prices up, combined with the added costs of US tipping culture. Prices in the more touristy areas are generally even higher, although you can find cheaper food options away from the beachfront restaurants. With many items needing to be imported and tourism as one of the key industries across the islands, this isn’t somewhere for a bargain break.
Are there health and safety tips for visiting Hawaii?
Hawaii is generally a very safe destination, with one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the US, although it pays to take the usual precautions when it comes to valuables. Like mainland America, you won’t need any additional vaccinations beyond those recommended for life in the UK, although you’ll need mosquito repellent, especially during the summer months. Hawaii’s natural treasures are where some of the islands’ dangers lie; always check where it’s safe to swim, and be aware of any jellyfish advisories, especially shortly after a full moon. Follow advice when hiking as well, particularly if the weather has been wet or if you’re heading out late in the day to avoid walking after dark. Always stick to marked paths if you’re hiking near lava flows too. Joining a Hawaii guided tour with knowledgeable leaders is a good way to ensure you stay safe.
How long is the flight from the UK to Hawaii?
