From fascinating Maya ruins to palm-fringed beaches and lush jungles, parched deserts and dormant volcanoes, plus its colourful colonial cities, Mexico truly does have it all. On our Mexico holidays, you’ll see some of the world’s most intriguing archaeological sites before relaxing with a margarita in the buzzing squares of Mexico City or enjoying the white sands and turquoise seas of the country’s beautiful coasts.

Stroll the streets of vibrant Oaxaca, trace history from Mexico’s ancient peoples to Spanish conquistadors, discover a tree thought to be over 2,000 years old, and cruise down majestic rivers along the way. Or spy fabulous birdlife from the beaches of the Gulf coast, relaxing on the white sands of Huatulco during one of our cruise holidays, before discovering why pretty Puerto Vallarta was a hit with Hollywood’s stars back in the 1960s.

Like its native jalapeno peppers and tequila, Mexico embodies a spicy, fiery passion for la vida. You’ll encounter the same spirit throughout the country's vibrant art and music scene, as well as its complex culture, history and geography. Mexico’s charm lies in its blend of ancient heritage and modern atmosphere, where each day brings a new and memorable surprise – discover all this and more on one of our Mexico tours.

What our experts love about Mexico

Mexican food is internationally known and loved but there's nothing that can quite match up to eating the 'real thing' in actual Mexico. I especially love the traditional dish of Chilaquiles. Normally eaten for breakfast it is made up of fried tortillas and a variety of toppings. The perfect start to the day after a few margaritas the night before!

What are the best places to visit in Mexico?

Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan

One of the most important Aztec sites in Mexico, Teotihuacan is also one of the most impressive. Covering eight square miles at its peak, the vast UNESCO-listed site was once one of the largest and most influential cities in the world. Home to the imposing 66-metre-high Pyramid of the Sun, you can gaze out at the astonishing views after climbing to the top, before walking the Avenue of the Dead which leads to the Pyramid of the Moon and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl. Discover more about this lost civilisation, and stories from the mystical city as you go.

Chichén Itza

Chichén Itza

Probably the most famous Maya site in the whole country, no Mexico tours are complete without a visit to the spectacular Chichén Itzá, dating back to 850AD. At its heart, the imposing El Castillo pyramid, also known as the Temple of Kukulcan, towers above the sun-drenched grass. But that’s only the start of the intriguing remains, from the Temple of Warriors to the Wall of Skulls, Maya ball court and the 22m-deep Sacred Cenote, a well where over 50 skeletons have been found.

Puebla

Often overlooked as a destination on Mexico holidays, Puebla is a UNESCO World Heritage site in its own right, and famous for its food, colourful colonial architecture and equally vibrant pottery. Founded in 1531, Puebla is also one of the oldest cities in Mexico, celebrated for its Spanish Talavera tiles as well as for some of the country’s best-known traditional foods, including mole poblano and chiles en nogada. As you explore the historic centre on our Mexico escorted tours, you’ll learn about the battle of Cinco de Mayo, which saw the Mexicans defeat the French.

Palenque

Palenque

The Mayan ruins at Palenque may not be the best known in Mexico, but they’re some of the most magical to explore, as well as being some of the best examples of this ancient people’s architecture. As howler monkeys and parrots chatter in the trees, walking through the mists into this jungle setting is one of the most memorable experiences of any Mexico tours. Reaching its peak in around AD 600-700, the city was later deserted and reclaimed by the jungle, only to be rediscovered in 1785, with the majority of the vast site still to be excavated.

Merida

Merida

This gleaming white city has been the cultural capital of the Yucatan Peninsula for over 500 years, with a beguiling blend of colonial charm and cosmopolitan style. With some of the region’s best museums, it’s a great place to visit alongside the peninsula’s major archaeological sites, including Uxmal, Kabah and the iconic Chichén Itza. People watch from the tree-lined Plaza Grande, Merida’s main square, and if your timing is right, catch the Maya light show on the side of the museum or see an ancient Maya ball game brought back to life (happily without the original human sacrifice).

Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta

This seafront town has plenty to tempt, known for its beaches, nightlife and Hollywood links, a favourite of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the 60s. Set on the Pacific Coast, it’s easy to while away the hours wandering cobbled streets lined with quirky boutiques or exploring the ornate Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church. But you’ll always be drawn back to the ocean, strolling the promenade of El Malecón dotted with sculptures and a string of bars and clubs. Offshore, there’s snorkelling in Los Arcos National Marine Park, where granite rock arches loom above clear water teeming with colourful fish.

More information about Mexico

The vast majority of people in Mexico speak Spanish, although with slightly different pronunciation and some different words from the version spoken in Spain. In some areas of the country, indigenous languages such as Nuahatl are also spoken. English is widely understood and spoken in tourist areas as well as in the northern area of Mexico close to the border with the USA.

The flight time from London to Mexico City is approximately 11 hours 50 mins.

Currently, UK citizens don’t need a visa to travel to Mexico. Requirements can change, though – for the most up-to-date information on visas, please use the quick-check tool on our visa requirements page.

The Mexican Peso is the official currency of Mexico, with one Peso divided into 100 centavos. Current coins include 5, 10, 20 and 50 centavos, as well as 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 Peso coins. Notes include 10, 20, 50 and 100 Pesos (as well as some larger denominations).

Mexico is divided into three different regions in terms of climate, tropical, subtropical and temperate, and the country is home to everything from desert to tropical rainforest. The Tropic of Cancer splits the country approximately in two, with northern areas tending to be drier and cooler during winter, and the areas south tending to be warmer year-round but also wetter. The rainy season runs from around June to mid-October and both coasts can encounter hurricanes from June to November. Mexico City tends to have mild winters and pleasant summers, while Oaxaca is warmer with rainy summers, although can be cool in winter.

The best time to visit Mexico is during the drier months from November to April. The rest of the year can get very hot, especially on the coast and Yucatan peninsula, with most rain between June and October. Mexico City can feel chilly during the winter months, so early spring sees some of the best weather in the capital. Oaxaca experiences fewer differences of temperature but enjoys some of the best weather in February to March too. And you’ll enjoy more pleasant sunny dry days in Puerto Vallarta during winter and spring before temperatures rise, plus there’s the chance to spot whales from December to March.

Unfiltered tap water isn’t safe to drink in many areas of Mexico, and even in Puerto Vallarta and Cancun where treatment quality is high, it can be better to drink bottled water to stay safe. Tap water is normally fine to brush your teeth with in tourist resorts, as long as you don’t swallow it.

The tourist areas of Mexico, including Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, tend to be among the safest parts of the country, although it’s wise to stay in well-lit areas after dark. Crime is also a risk in the bigger cities, including from unlicensed taxi drivers in Mexico City. Travelling on one of Titan’s Mexico escorted tours ensures you can avoid some of the risks of travelling solo, as well as getting advice from the tour manager on any specific local issues.

Mexico uses plug types A and B so you will need a US-style adaptor plug for UK devices - one suitable for the USA and Canada will work in Mexico. The country operates on a 127V supply voltage and 60Hz, although everyday items such as laptops, tablets, phones, cameras and toothbrush chargers are unlikely to need a voltage converter.

Corn, chilli and beans have been called the essential three ingredients of Mexican food, but you’ll also recognize everything from guacamole to tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas among other dishes as you travel. Don’t miss the chance to try Mole sauce, a mix of chilli, chocolate and spices, as well as tamales, corn dough stuffed with meat or vegetables and cooked in corn husks or leaves, then for a touch of sweetness, indulge in some churros with chocolate or dulce de leche sauce. Wash it all down with some agua fresca, a mix of fruit juice, sweetener and water, or a margarita.
